It’s quite likely that those stumps were culled wild cherries. My father-in-law tells a story about some of his father’s dairy cattle lost to poisoning from the wilted leaves and branches that utility crews left for them when trimming around the power lines. As he tells it, those trees weren’t even in the pasture but the crew tossed the branches over the fence so they wouldn’t have to haul them off.
As for the taste of the cherries — maybe a slight bitterness but not not significant, I think. I snack on them in season when I’m out and about. They have relatively large seeds for such a small fruit, but there’s a trick to holding them on the tongue and squeezing out the juice before spitting out the seeds. I quite like the taste. When I was a kid, we sometimes gathered enough all at once for a batch of jelly, but nowadays I just eat what I can reach as they ripen and let the birds have the rest.

I’ve walked by thousands of black cherry trees in my life and I have two painful confessions to make. I’ve never known that they had fruit (but that is probably because I am red/green colorblind) and I’ve never eaten the fruit. I’m going to have to remedy those problems now.
