Sunday fungus

fungus.JPG This bit of shelf fungus is growing high in a tree overlooking the lake at Roundrock. I used the zoom on my new camera, and I'm surprised my hand was steady enuf to get such a crisp shot. I've always understood that when a fungus like this first appears on the outside of a tree, the invasion inside the the tree is extensive, and the tree (or limb, in this case) is doomed. This fungus has been here for years, and the branches beyond its growth have continued to leaf out each spring and appear as vigorous as ever, so it may be that my fungal understandings are mistaken. I'd hate to lose any limbs from this particular tree since it rises majestically over the lake (when there is a lake). Plus, if a large branch snapped off, I'd have to fish it out of the water to cut it up. So I'll keep an eye on things for you.

Karen at trees, if you please is currently hosting the 16th edition of the Festival of the Trees. She's beginning to see a change in the season. There are several familiar names popping up there as well as some new ones. Head on over and breathe in the air of autumn. Windywillow will host the next edition, and keeping with the season, she's looking for submissions of scary trees. (Really, any tree links will be fine, but she hopes to feature the spooky ones first.) Her submission deadline will be October 26, which is a little earlier than normal, but she wants to have her edition up in time for Halloween, so be on the look out for those scary trees!

Even the trees have ears! For some reason, this picture reminds me of that old tv show, When Things were Rotten. It was a comedy about Robin Hood. At one point, one of the characters said, “Even the walls have ears!” The the camera pointed to a wall full of ears. Heh:)

I have a tree with these things on it and I sure hope it is not going to fall on my house.

Maybe somebody who really knows about such things will comment on this.
