Winner of the Name That Buck Contest

Thanks to everyone who offered suggestions for the Name That Buck Contest. I wish I could use them all, but I’d never remember them all each time I went to the woods.

Among the many suggestions were these:

  • Yale
  • Bob
  • Herne
  • Ishmael
  • Larry
  • Roger
  • Buck Rogers
  • Seamus Heaney
  • Buckminister Fuller
  • Buck Mulligan
  • Roundrock Rogue
  • Sentinel
  • Watcher in the Woods
  • Buck
  • Quapaw
  • Bones Malone
  • Tribune
  • Cervidae
  • Bocephus
  • Goliath
  • Gigantes
  • Boregard
  • Scully
  • Skully
  • Harley

The winning name had the advantage of a literary reference. (I’m a sucker for such things.) And the winner is

Buck Mulligan!

Buck Mulligan is the first character to be named in James Joyce’s novel Ulysses. He makes his appearance in the very first sentence. And now that I have this connection, perhaps I’ll actually read that difficult and challenging book.*

The name was suggested by Deborah Stein, and on my next trip to Roundrock, I’m going to find a really nice one for her as her prize.

*Note that Seamus Heaney is also a literary reference. He wrote a poem about the finding of a elk skeleton in a bog. Sadly, I’m more likely to read Ulysses than poetry. Yep, I’m a heathen.

Congratulations to Deborah! What a fun contest this was. Seamus Heaney was also a good suggestion. At any rate, glad a name has been bestowed on the poor fellas’ skull bones.

Excellent name. When I first read it, I thought it was another literary reference to a book entitled Slummulligan Stew by Edward Abbey. I haven’t read Ulysses either.

Buck Mulligan! Too funny. I like the losing names, too!

What a thrill to ‘win’ the contest and I am so looking forward to holding a round rock from Roundrock. I will do my best to send dispatches, as this geologic masterpiece will be sauntering about New England now.

Buck Mulligan is very well suited for a great name. My mother’s great g’ma was first cousin to J.J. and I once tried to read Ulysses by him, and now I will reread it! Thanks for having that contest…Good job Deborah!! I still like so many of the non-winners too!
